Well, you add a lot of confusion to this. You appear to be trying to address
a POP3 problem in the realm of an SMTP problem. If Exim delivers mail with
the right permissions and the POP3 server is configured to run as the
"appropriate user" (with the necessary permissions) things should just work.
Let us have the log extracts for instances where Mail.app, Outlook, etc
don't work, because the problem seems to be with the permissions of the POP3
server you are running.
